School & Day Care Planning

During a pandemic, schools and daycares will play an important role. Plans need to be in place to respond quickly and protect the health of our children during an emergency or disaster. Closing schools and daycares can be an effective means of delaying the spread of a disease and can decrease the children’s exposure to illness.

If schools and daycares are closed, children should stay at home – away from crowds, groups and other people as much as possible. No gathering at the mall or movie theaters. Sporting and other non-academic events may be cancelled.

Closing schools and daycares for an extended period of time will create challenges for families and businesses. People are urged to begin planning now for the possibility of facilities closing due to disease outbreak.
Resources have been designed to help provide schools and daycares with practical tools needed to prepare staff, children and parents for a pandemic flu outbreak. These resources include preparedness and planning information, fact sheets on flu symptoms, prevention and health care tips.

Schools and Day Care Providers have capabilities to provide security and prevention measures to address wide spread transmission of diseases, such as pandemic influenza, in their facilities and communities during emergencies and disasters.
